Rescuing the Wheat Thins: The Crunch is Calling by Andrew Taylon

I saw this Wheat Thins’ commercial on ESPN the other day,
and I thought it was pretty funny. I’ve never noticed them advertising a whole
lot until recently, and I think what they’ve come out with is pretty decent. I’m
always a big fan of using humor in advertising, and this commercial doesn’t
disappoint. I think if you’re a fan of Wheat Thins, then this will only make
you more likely to buy them. What do you guys think of it?

While this commercial was still very funny, I still do not see how it tells us about the brand. The sticks are crunchy yeah, but how do they taste, and how is this product different from other snacks.

I think that the this ad’s ludicrous and comical nature can really grab the viewer’s attention. However, I don’t think that Wheat Thins highlighted a very important factor of their product. It seems like “the crunch” aspect of food has already been done many times before. Either way, I don’t know many people that buy food based on the sound it makes when consumed.

I do not like this commercial and I don’t think it promotes the product very well. I think the idea behind the ad is kind of stupid and unrealistic. I find it hard to make a connection between the crunch and being rescued from being stuck under a large boulder? I think they need to focus more on the taste of the product – not so much the sound it makes when you bite into it.

I have to disagree with the previous posters for the most part. I think this ad does a great job at showing the importance of Wheat Thins. Obviously Wheat thins have the above importance of a human life, or as they sarcastically portray the relative importance of a Wheat Thin box. It may not say a lot about the brand, but it does say an enormous amount of the importance that we take in the brand itself.

I agree with Shelby. The crunch aspect has been done way too much. I can’t think of the cereal off hand, but remember the cereal commercial with the guy’s boss talking to him and he isn’t listening to what the boss is saying because his cereal crunches so loudly. I think this Wheat Thin’s ad is very similar. Also, the crunching sound sounds very fake.

I actually like this commercial, its really funny and its centers on the fact that wheat thins are desirable. I think you can’t take it too literal.
Obviously no one is going to try this if they’re stuck under a boulder. Wheat thins has always had a fun atmosphere around their product and this only continues their previous attitude.

I suppose it’s sort of funny, but I don’t find it hilarious or anything. As stated above, the product doesn’t seem as promoted as the fact that they were trying to play off the rescue/survival theme and be funny. In actuality, I don’t think it was all that funny, so it doesn’t sell the product to me exactly.

I think that this is definitely one of Wheatthins better ads. I like the dog.. but it also helps to broaden their target market making the ad effective.
